There is an obnoxious irony that comes with being a singer. All the best of singers are excellent at showing emotion through singing. This is where the money comes from! No one wants to pay someone who stands on the stage and sings with a bland facial expression. Unfortunately, emotion can also be hindering to singers. In fact, I struggle with it all the time.
I am a very emotional person. I cry whenever I experience intense emotion. If I am angry, I start crying. If I am embarrassed, I start crying. If I am sad, I cry. I personally do not think that is a bad thing (even though I was constantly mad fun of for it as a kid), but it becomes a problem when I am singing. There are a few situations that I often struggle with: 1. Sad pieces It is really hard not to sing with your feelings in emotional pieces, but there is a line. You have to be acting; you cannot get too invested because as soon as you risk crying, your throat weirds out. Naturally, this messed up your singing voice and you sound like an idiot while singing a gorgeous piece. Thankfully, I have gotten a lot better on this one. 2. Bad days You know when you have those days where you just feel like crap and want to cry? Those are the hardest days to sing. Not only is it hard to sing because of the whole throat-tweaking-out thing that I mentioned before, but also because you don't have the energy to use proper technique or to sing a happy piece. This one I really struggle with, because the only thing you can do is try to forget about how you are feeling and delve into the piece that you are working on. 3. Angry pieces Have you ever noticed that you tense up when you are angry? Especially at the neck? SO bad for singing. It is so frustrating because you want to look angry while singing a piece that requires such an emotion, but you cannot allow your body to do things that might alter or harm your voice. The best way to deal with this is to cleverly use dynamics and facial expressions. So these are my long-term singing challenges! Do you ever struggle with these? Yay! So now I am an SAI and have time to talk about it! I am so happy to be an active! I am now a member of one of the best groups of women on campus! I know that the next few years with these girls will be amazing. I now have 40 sisters to support and inspire me. I look forward to making letters with my sisters and singing in harmony with them whenever we meet. Last night I got an amazing gift from my Big after initiation! She got me an amazing black shirt with sparkly, red letters! On the sleeve it says "Lil Sis"! She has a matching shirt that says "Big Sis"! It is super cute. She also got me a white flower crown that matches her black one. The way she packaged it was adorable! She put it in a music-themed fabric and put rose petals on top. Then she put it in a mason jar. When we took out the fabric, the petals got everywhere, like confetti! It was adorable! I love my Big a lot, and will cry a ton when she graduates next year! I really want to be a Big next spring. It will take a lot of work, but it will be worth it! I can't wait to make a bunch of crafty presents for my future little! I also can't wait to help them learn about this amazing sorority! For now, though, I need to take things one step at a time! I found this great picture when looking for SAI quotes and photos! I get this all the time when I tell people that I am in a music fraternity! Here's to the next few years with my beautiful SAI girls!
Are you an SAI? When were you initiated? It's official! I am now an SAI! I figured out who my secret is and got a beautiful gift! I love all the women in this group and cannot wait to make memories with them all. Next year I will be living in the house. Love and Roses! Today is the day that my majors collide! It isn't necessary a bad thing, but I will definitely be all over the place! I am hosting and moderating for the German conference, so I will be everywhere at once for that. I also have a concert tonight, which means that I will have an hour and a half dress rehearsal before the concert. I feel bad for my guest! I won't be there to talk to her or give her a tour around the school. What a host I am, right? It'll all turn out okay in the end though.
Tomorrow, I will be introducing three guest speakers at the conference at the lovely time of 9:15. After that, I will be leading a Q&A session. All of this will be in German of course. Later I will be going to the conference's dinner. Of course, I will be attending recitals in between all of these conference events. I will definitely not be bored! Although the idea of it all stresses me out a bit, it will definitely be a good opportunity to practice speaking German and get used to the business that can come with college and the world beyond. Luckily, there will be people there to support me and I won't be in charge of things for too long. It is all mostly about being present (except for the moderating thing, but that will not be long). Naturally, I will have to weave in time for homework. I find that the best way to do this is to take my homework with me and do it whoever I have a few minutes here and there. Even the busiest of schedules has a bit of extra time. I am choosing to be optimistic about the whole thing. Next week is juries! I will have to sing for the voice faculty at 6 on Monday. I am a bit nervous, but I have done it before. It shouldn't be as difficult this time. My voice teacher is amazing, so I am sure that I will do fine. The hardest part about it, though, is finding the time to practice for it this weekend. It will take some clever planning to fit in the half to full hour that I need. It will turn out though; I have all my pieces memorized. At this point it is all about building confidence. How is life treating you? Are you busy this weekend too? Okay, I absolutely love Jenna Marbles! She is so funny! Here is one of her videos!
I am so excited about this. I am in love with the King's Singers and Billy Joel is my childhood. When I found this on youtube today, I almost fainted! What a great combination of some of my favorite musicians (not to mention, one of my favorite songs)! I hope you love it as much as I do! Video originally from classics online.com. Thanks to magenta687 for putting it on youtube!
