I get off for spring break this Friday and decided that it was time to clean up my room. When you go off to college, you often take too much stuff. That is okay, but it can get pretty cluttered in your tiny, little dorm room. Here is where spring cleaning comes in!
Right before spring break is the best time to organize your room. Why? Because you can take everything you don't need home!
Here's how I am going to approach my cleaning and packing for this week.
1. Sort through the desk
A college student's desk is his or her world when it comes to studying. There are papers everywhere and the drawers are cluttered beyond use. I will first start by sorting through the stuff on my desk. I usually do this in 3 piles or categories: to keep, to throw away, and to take home. Once I'm done with that, I put the "to keep" stuff back on my desk (in an orderly fashion of course!) and throw away the junk. All the other stuff goes in the suitcase!
2. Weed out your bookshelf
If you have textbooks from last semester that you don't need now, sort them out and either sell them or take them home. You simply do not have enough space in your dorm to hold all of that. The same goes for leisure books. If you aren't going to read it again, take it home.
3. Go through your closet
This is the worst part. If you don't wear something, take it home. This can be really difficult because you always think that you might need it or eventually wear it, but let's be real: you are not going to wear it. Take it home! Then you will have more room in your closet to store other clothes!
4. Attack your food stash
Chances are, you have food in your stash that should probably be thrown out. Check expression dates and perishables, throwing away whatever doesn't pass the test. If you aren't eating something and won't in the future, take it home so your family will enjoy it or donate it. You want your food stash to be a clean and heavenly spot to store great food!
5. Vacuum
It makes a huge difference in the appearance of your room. You may think your room is clean, but when you vacuum it, it suddenly looks a lot better.
6. Sort through everything else!
If you have other stuff that you don't use just lying around, it is time to take it home.
That is all for now! How do you approach your spring cleaning?
Update on housing disaster: I found a fourth person to replace the girl that dropped out! It was pretty amazing and very last minute, but we found someone! I was so relieved. My time was at 8:02, so I went to go do that on the internet when I got an email. It said that all the 4-people suites were full. We would have to have 6 people in order to get into Harriet.
I was so angry! I had tried so hard all day to fix the problem, and then they added a new one on top! We could have roomed with another group of four and lived in a different building, but it isn't nearly as nice. Today, we have to wait until 6:35 to request, which is when they lift the number restrictions and it becomes a free-for-all. I am still hoping that this will work out, but so far it looks like the odds are not in our favor.
Luckily, I have a backup plan. If this doesn't work out, I will just live in SAI's house!
