Growing up, I never thought that I would rush for a sorority (or women's fraternity). The idea was so far from my mind that I didn't even consider it as an option until now. I had always associated Greek life with drinking, partying, and sex, and, to be honest, I am not for that life. However, recently I have decided that Greek life would be good for me.
This is not because of the partying. My original view of that has not changed. I am rushing because I honestly believe that being in a women's fraternity will be beneficial for my future. Right now I am smack-dab in the middle of rushing for the two professional music fraternities on campus. I am actually writing this post in my business casual outfit right now. Soon, I will be leaving to visit the house.
The reason why I am rushing is because of the value of networking. This is SO important when going into music. Being able to say that you were in a music fraternity in college is big for trying to have a successful career in music. Besides this value, I am excited to get to know the other students that love music as much as I do. I am not the sort of person that typically runs up to people and introduces herself. Now that I am rushing, I can meet people without the awkwardness of trying to approach a stranger.
Not to mention how welcoming everyone is. The two fraternities that I am rushing for are SAI and DO and they are both very supportive of their members. It made me happy to see everyone cheering for their performers yesterday at the Musicale. It is the kind of support that I need as an aspiring musician. Confidence is everything.
I also look forward to volunteering and planning events. This is the sort of thing that I live for. I love to help people, and being a part of a fraternity will fulfill my need for helping others.
All in all, I am glad that I am rushing and hope that some of my readers will become more open to the idea of Greek life. Who knows, it may surprise you!
